Bergen is Norway's second-largest city and one of the country's most important destinations for visitors. Located on Norway's western coast and surrounded by seven mountains, Bergen combines historic streets, a lively harbour, museums, restaurants and easy access to the famous fjords of Western Norway.

The city's historic waterfront, Bryggen, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bergen's location between the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord also makes it a convenient base for exploring the fjord region.

Bergen at a Glance

  • Country: Norway

  • Known as: Gateway to the Fjords
  • Main airport: Bergen Airport, Flesland
  • Recommended first visit: 2–3 days
  • Best for: Fjords, history, hiking, museums, seafood, photography and scenic trips

Bergen has a compact city centre, making many central attractions easy to explore on foot. Public transport is useful for destinations outside the centre.

  • Mount Fløyen
  • Fløibanen Funicular
  • Mount Ulriken
  • Bergen Fish Market
  • Bergenhus Fortress
  • KODE Art Museums
  • Bergen Aquarium
  • Fjord cruise
  • Troldhaugen — Edvard Grieg's home

These attractions and experiences are among those highlighted by Visit Norway and Visit Bergen.

3.1 Bryggen — Bergen's Historic Waterfront

Bryggen is probably the most recognizable part of Bergen.

The colourful wooden buildings along the old harbour represent Bergen's historic role as a major European trading port.

Bryggen is included on UNESCO's World Heritage List and remains an active part of the city rather than simply being a museum.

What to do: walk through the narrow passages, photograph the wooden buildings, visit small shops and galleries, explore nearby museums, walk towards Bergenhus Fortress, continue towards the Fish Market.

Suggested time: 1–2 hours.

Best photo: walk slightly away from the main harbour and photograph the entire row of historic buildings from the waterfront.

3.2 Mount Fløyen

Mount Fløyen is one of Bergen's most popular viewpoints.

You can reach the top by hiking or by taking the Fløibanen funicular.

From the mountain you get panoramic views over Bergen, the harbour and surrounding landscapes. Visit Norway specifically highlights Fløyen and the funicular as major Bergen experiences.

Choose your experience — Easy: Fløibanen up and down. Active: walk/hike up and take the funicular down. Hiking: continue into the surrounding mountain trails.

Suggested time: 2–3 hours.

3.3 Fløibanen Funicular

The Fløibanen connects central Bergen with Mount Fløyen.

It is particularly convenient for visitors who want a mountain viewpoint without committing to a long uphill hike.

Families with children can also combine the funicular with outdoor areas around Mount Fløyen.

Travel tip: check the current operating schedule and ticket prices before your visit.

3.4 Mount Ulriken

At 643 metres, Ulriken is the highest of Bergen's seven mountains.

You can hike to the summit or use the Ulriken cable car.

Best for: panoramic views, hiking, photography, outdoor activities, sunrise/sunset photography when conditions permit.

Fløyen vs Ulriken — Fløyen: easier access and very convenient from central Bergen. Ulriken: higher summit and a stronger mountain experience.

If you have two days in Bergen, consider experiencing both.

3.5 Bergen Fish Market

The Fish Market is located in the harbour area and is one of Bergen's well-known visitor stops.

You can find seafood and other food options here, making it a convenient place to experience some of Bergen's culinary culture.

Try: salmon, cod, shrimp, local seafood, other Norwegian dishes.

Travel tip: prices at tourist-oriented waterfront locations can vary significantly. Compare options if you are travelling on a budget.

3.6 Bergenhus Fortress

Bergenhus Fortress stands near the harbour and is one of the historic attractions in the Bryggen area.

It works particularly well as part of a walking route: Bryggen → Bergenhus Fortress → harbour → Fish Market.

This means you can visit several major attractions without needing public transport.

3.7 KODE Art Museums

KODE is one of Bergen's major cultural institutions.

The museums cover Norwegian and international art, including works connected with major Norwegian artists.

Visit Norway lists KODE among Bergen's principal attractions.

Suggested time: 1.5–3 hours depending on how much of the collection you want to explore.

3.8 Bergen Aquarium

Bergen Aquarium is another option, particularly for families.

The attraction includes marine life and other animals and can be combined with a walk around the waterfront.

Visit Bergen lists the aquarium among Bergen's major attractions and includes it among attractions connected with the Bergen Card.

3.9 Troldhaugen

Troldhaugen was the home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.

It offers visitors a different side of Bergen: music, history and cultural heritage rather than fjord scenery.

Visit Norway includes Troldhaugen among recommended Bergen experiences.

3.10 Fjord Cruises from Bergen

This is one of the biggest reasons to include Bergen in a Norway itinerary.

Bergen is positioned between the Sognefjord and Hardangerfjord, giving travellers access to numerous fjord excursions.

Possible experiences include: short fjord cruises, Mostraumen cruise, Sognefjord excursions, Flüm trips, NÌrøyfjord excursions, combined train and fjord journeys.

Visit Bergen notes that fjord cruises depart from Bergen throughout the year.

Mostraumen Fjord Cruise

For travellers who do not have time for a full-day fjord excursion, a cruise towards Mostraumen/Osterfjord can provide a shorter fjord experience from Bergen.

Visit Bergen currently lists a Mostraumen fjord cruise among its major activities.

Good for: first-time visitors, families, short stays, photography, travellers without a rental car.

Always check the current departure schedule before booking.

3.11 Bergen Railway — Oslo to Bergen

One of the classic ways to arrive in Bergen is by train from Oslo.

The Bergensbanen connects Norway's two largest cities and crosses mountainous landscapes.

Visit Bergen describes the railway journey as a major scenic travel experience, with the highest point at Finse at approximately 1,222 metres above sea level.

Suggested route: Oslo → Bergen. Instead of treating the train simply as transportation, consider it part of your Norway experience.

Bergen → Flåm Option

Another popular combination is: Bergen → Myrdal → Flåm, where travellers can connect with the famous Flåm Railway.

This can be incorporated into a wider fjord itinerary.

3.12 Getting to Bergen

Bergen can be reached by: air, train, bus, car, ferry, cruise.

Visit Bergen confirms direct flights, train connections from Oslo, ferry connections and road access.

Bergen Airport

Bergen Airport Flesland is connected to the city centre by Bybanen Light Rail and Airport bus, with taxis also available.

Visit Bergen states that the airport is approximately 30 minutes from the city centre and that both the light rail and airport bus provide connections.

3.13 Getting Around Bergen

Bergen's city centre is compact and walking is often the easiest option.

For longer journeys, public transport is operated by Skyss, including bus and Bybanen Light Rail.

Local boats can also connect destinations along the coast and fjords.

3.14 Bergen Card

For visitors planning multiple attractions, the Bergen Card is worth investigating.

Bergen Card prices listed by Visit Bergen for 2026:

  • 24 hours: Adult NOK 400, Child (3–15) NOK 100
  • 48 hours: Adult NOK 500, Child (3–15) NOK 125
